Department 66

Deep in the Southwest corner of France lies department 66, the inspiration and namesake of the DEPARTMENT 66 winery and vineyards in Maury, France, just two hours east of Barcelona, Spain. Discovered by Phinney on a trip to France about ten years ago, the property is home to some very old Grenache vines.

Dave discovered, in his words, "perhaps the most amazing confluence of vineyards I've ever been exposed to." He spent days driving around with his jaw agape, stunned by the raw beauty of this truly unique place. Phinney originally bought just under forty acres and wished he had bought more. He got the opportunity to do that later. He began construction of the winery in 2009 and now has over three hundred acres of vineyards. The winery is just 30 minutes inland from the ancient Roman Port city of Perpignan. The region is known as “Cotes Catalanes” and is a sub-appellation of the Roussillon.
