German wine is primarily produced in the southwest of Germany, along river Rhine and its tributaries, vineyard history dating back to the Roman era. White wine accounts for almost two thirds of the total production. Many of the best vineyards in Germany are steep vineyards overlooking rivers, where mechanization is impossible and a lot of manual labor is needed to produce the wine. To many, Germany produces the world's most elegant and aromatically pure white wines.
